True Grit Effort
My first thought after watching
the video was how I don’t even like the word “Grit”. I understand the meaning
and the point they make is a good one but the word… it just rubs me the wrong
way. I’m going to call it effort instead.
My thoughts on education are that it is always
for the long term. Sure, I think all of us have taken the odd class and right
after said “I’ll never use that again.” Or “I won’t ever need that in life.”
But at the end of the day if we put effort into our education even if it’s a class
were not interested in. We will find valuable things that we can use in life
just maybe not the way it was presented in class.
What’s more important grades or learning? Well
most of our parents will say our grades. “If you don’t get those grades up son
your grounded!” Thankfully now as an older learner I value the opportunity to
focus on learning.
So, what does it take to learn? Some say it takes
a high level of intelligence but as we learned in the Ted Talk “Grit” by Angela
Lee Duckworth that is not the case. In
fact very intelligent students can fail because they aren’t “gritty” (I hate the
word but know what she means) enough. It takes effort everyone! We can all
learn anything we put our minds to, its all just effort. To learn requires a
desire to learn just showing up and going through the motions won’t do it. So,
let’s just make a decision to learn and then give it our best shot.
